Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge and state park is one of nine refuges that can be found in Oklahoma. The area was designated as a refuge in 1930 and serves primarily as a breeding ground for migratory birds. This includes waterfowl, the white pelican, numerous species of heron and Canadian geese. Address: 3 miles south of Cherokee, along State Highway 8 OK USA
